Choosing Your Domain Name

Boost your business with a domain name that says what you do!

When thinking about registering a domain name for the first time for their business, most company bosses limit themselves to their company name, or an available variant of it.

But the humble domain name can be used as a marketing tool in itself. When you register your domain name the first one should be your company name and every possible variation on it you can think of to help prevent any of your competitors stealing business from you by passing off as you.

So for example if you were The Widget Company Ltd you would first want to try and register "widget.co.uk" as the main domain name for your company. You would also want to register this in .com, .net, .info and .biz as well if they are available.

Next you would think of variations on the name for example "widgetco.com", "widgetcompany.com" and "thewidgetco.com" and so on.

You can then consider what you want your customers to do and register domain names for specific marketing campaigns, for example "buywidgets.com", "getwidgetscheap.co.uk", "searchforwidgets.com" and so on.

Then you can also consider what your products are used for and also register any specific product names your company uses.

For example if you sold an "X-500 Widget" for use in plumbing you might want to consider registering "widgetsforplumbing.com", "x-500.co.uk" and "widgetx-500.com". In this instance you should also consider registering a version of the domain name with and without hyphens.

Don't forget if you are registering a domain name which contains words that people commonly mis-spell, you should also register the most common mis-spellings to help guarantee you don't lose any business. In the example above you might want to register "widgetsforplumming.com" and "widgetsforpluming.co.uk".
